Description

Black and white photocopy 8"h x 10"w on heavy photographic paper of the exterior of Blackistone Island lighthouse when it no longer served as a lighthouse. The photo was "No. 21 of a series depicting the principal features of Washington's historic river." This may have been a newspaper or magazine insert. The spare two story gable end building has an inside end chimney on each peak and the round tower for the light looms up from the middle of the roof. There is a masonry section with a small two-light window facing the camera, topped by a smaller masonry section and a walkway with railing all the way around. Above that is a six pane? cupola for the light itself topped by a metal roof with a lightning rod at the very top. The roof appears to be cedar shakes and is much defaced on the right by guano. There are five narrow six over six windows on the second floor. Each window has shutters and most of the shutters are closed. Below the windows, a shed roof porch extends the entire length of the building. There is a center door to the first floor and two windows on each side. The shutters are closed, so it is not possible to make out details. The porch is one bay deep and five bays wide. There is a waist high railing around the porch, but no visible screening. There are six steps down to the ground from the center of the porch. There may be an attached little outbuilding on the right. In the distance on the right is the large concrete cross built to commemorate the landing of Lord Baltimore's pioneers on what was then called St. Clement's Island. At the bottom left of the photo is a truncated logo possibly of an Irish wolfhound that was probably the emblem of the company that sponsored the series. Immediately above the photo is is the caption quoted above and above that caption: "Potomac portrait | The abandoned lighthouse on Blackstone's [sic] Island, near the mouth of the river. Giant cross in background commemorates the landing of first Maryland setlers in 1634." ********************************** Text on verso: "PHD-6386(L) PHD-6386(L) U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory Dahlgren, Virginia RELEASED If published credit must be given as follow 'Official photograph U.S. Navy'"
