Scope and Content

24 folders in 2 boxes + 1 encapsulated document 20 1/4" x 14 3/8" This material is largely tax, estate, and other financial records of a succession of Bohanan males. The earliest person for whom there are records is Jonathan Bohanan who died in 1847. His estate was managed by his son, John Bohanan (1811-1871). There are records for F. John Bohanan, James S. Bohanan, John Franklin Bohanan, W. T. Bohanan, and William H. Bohanan. John Bohanan was the administrator of the estate of William F. Benson and also S.G. M. Burroughs and there are many records from the protracted settlements of these estates. Mr. John Bohanan was involved in several lawsuits for payment of debts. There are many years' worth of records for payment of tuition and board at unnamed schools for both male and female Bohanan children. There was some sort of interaction with Theodosius Courtney, members of the Milburn family, and the Hilton family. There are two folders of miscellaneous letters, advertisements, and articles. Of particular interest in the group are records of the enlistment in the Union Army of one of Mr. Bohanan's slaves and one of Mr. Burrough's slaves. After the war, it was possible to claim compensation for the "loss" of this property and Mr. Bohanan filed for himself and for the Burroughs' estate. It is not apparent from the papers whether compensation was forthcoming.
