Scope and Content

21 pieces of varying sizes Mr. Burroughs probably died in 1863 and Mr. Bohanan and Mrs. Burroughs were administrators of his estate. The estate was sued by Mary A. E. Burroughs for the services of "servant boy Ben" to the amount of $440 and it appears the case went to court. There are several lists of debts due the estate; one sheet is probably cut in half. A copy of the will indicates that all property devises to Mrs. Burroughs, with the proviso that she pay for the liberal education of Charles J. M. Bohanan, "whom I love as if he were my own child." Should Mrs. Burroughs marry again, half of the property would go to Charles Bohanan. No children or other bequests are mentioned. Three appraisals of the estate are included. The administrators filed for compensation for the loss of the slave William H. Gough who enlisted in the 38th regiment, Company B and had to submit several forms, including testimony of their loyalty to the United States government. It is not apparent that any compensation was ever received. Charles J. M. Bohanan is mentioned in John Bohanan's papers in 1871; John was trying to become the legal guardian of Charles.)
