Description

Dark brown leather Bible with fleur-de-lis in diamonds stamped on the front and back. The edges of the pages are gilded. "Holy Bible" is stamped on the spine in gold. The type is quite large and there are engravings in many places. This was the family Bible for J. Marshall Dent and his family. There are loose envelopes, pressed flowers, and death notices scattered among the pages. A very brown copy of the obituary of Lillia Dent, J. Marshall's mother, is pasted on the inside front cover. The Bible was published in 1870 by William H. Harding of Philadelphia. It may have been a wedding gift for J. Marshall and Ida, who were married in 1873.
