One 8 1/2"h x 11"w copy of a sepia tone photograph of the Briscoe family on the porch at Sotterley. None of the people is positively identified, but there is a strong family resemblance to 20th century Briscoes. Judging by the hairstyles of the women, the picture was taken sometime in the 1885 time frame. This picture is worthy of notice because it includes an African-American servant. From left to right in the first row is a dark-haired intense young man lounging in the arm of a young woman on his left. He was holding a very large straw hat. The seated young woman had light hair pulled tight on her head and a frizz of curls above her forehead. Her dress was striped with long puffed sleeves, a Peter Pan collar, a lace tie under the collar, and a contrasting belt at the waist. She held hands with the other seated young woman on her right. It is difficult to tell how that woman's hair was arranged. She also had on a striped dress of light-colored material with puffed sleeves, a lace frill around her neck and a very dark belt at the waist. At the end of the row was the servant. Her head was encased in white cloth. She was looking down. She had on a high-necked striped dress with buttons down the front and a white apron at her waist. She appeared to be wearing shoes. In the next row, left to right were two women who certainly look like Briscoes. They each had dark hair. The woman on the left had on a white blouse with puffy sleeves, a small collar, a pin at her neck, lace down the front of the blouse, a plaid dirndl skirt with a circle pin at the waist. The second woman had on a patterned blouse with a dark tie at the neck. The next woman had lighter hair--it may have been red--and wore a white blouse or dress with lots of lace framing the yoke. The next person was Dr. Briscoe, the patriarch. He had a full light beard, a white shirt and dark suit. The back row, left to right, was a young man with dark hair and a dark shirt. Next to him, a fidgety toddler was standing on the knee of his grandmother[?]. She had dark hair, and wore a white blouse and a dark skirt. Next to her was an older woman with a very triangular face. She wore a patterned dress with a dark belt.
