This is a professional portrait of Mr. Briscoe made by Taylor-Sargent. Mr. Briscoe is posed in his office at his desk. He has on a dark pinstriped suit with vest, a white shirt, a boldly patterned tie and a collar pin. There is a handkerchief in his breast pocket. He has a watch on his left wrist and a large ring on his left ring finger. His hair is slicked down and he is clean-shaven. He is looking straight into the camera with a solemn expression. The desk is either highly polished or has a glass top. There are two large ashtrays and a lighter on the desk and a box that may be for cigarettes or cigars. The three-part desk blotter is very large. On Mr. Briscoe's right is an architect's scale and on his far left may be a stapler, but I cannot identify the other things on the left. There is a cylindrical metal calendar in front of him and a large metal desk lamp with three tiers in its base and a sculptured shade attached to the post with a shell shaped connection. There is also a desk pen in a square base. Next to the pen, on the desk, is a loop of metal that in a different context would suggest a cheese cutter. I do not know what it is. The office is paneled, probably in knotty pine. There is an opening suggesting a window just above Mr. Briscoe's head, but it has been walled in. There are two horse figurines, possibly Clydesdales, on the "windowsill." Photos and certificates hang on the walls and in the corner of the room is a radio on a stand. There is no date on the portrait.Collection
