Members of the Camalier family practiced law and were judges in the county.
Benjamin Harris Camalier was a practicing attorney, State's Attorney beginning in 1900, and later a judge. Henry C. Camalier practiced in the 1940s and 1950s. The bulk of the collection is correspondence about the practice, including a few estates, some debt collection cases, deeds and mortgages, advice to Justices of the Peace from the State's Attorney, some farming information and tobacco sales, requests for job recommendations, and more. Mr. Camalier, just like Mr. Dorsey, was not in a hurry to collect debts, so there are lots of letters from unhappy clients. There is one folder of more personal letters. There is a notebook full of what appear to be notes taken during trials. There is a small booklet with only a few pages used, mostly for lists and financial data. There are seven tightly folded lists of male taxpayers for the years 1907 to 1912 and for 1919. This material was not carefully stored, so many pieces had to be discarded. There is a folder of examples of vermin damage at the beginning of Box 1.Collection
