Cannon in front of the Old Jail MuseumEntry/Object ID
1980.001.0173Description
8"h x 10"w black and white landscape oriented photo of the cannon in front of the Old Jail and courthouse. The cannon had been coated with something to prevent its deterioration. It was mounted amidships on a brick support of probably a dozen courses. A plaque was mounted on the side of the support "This cannon was brought to Maryland in 1634 on the Ark. Used in defense of St. Mary's City and as a St. Inigoes Manor boundary marker. Presented to St. Mary's County Historical Society by [the Society of Jesus]" the remainder of the text was obscured by bushes. There was another flat plaque on the top of the support--perhaps recognition of the mason who built the support. A brick path led to the cannon. One wing of the two-story brick courthouse was visible in the background as was a corner of the Old Jail.
