This correspondence was presented to Mr. Fenwick by Meredith Capper. The documents were found in an old house on Capper land. The house has since been torn down. Mr. Fenwick's note says Amanda Floyd Dunbar later married David Tyler, so perhaps the Dunbars were associated with this land and house.
February 18, 1865 letter from L. C. Dunbar to her mother. Lucie Dunbar was a student at St. Joseph's Academy in Emmittsburg. This is a sheet of writing paper folded in half with an embossed profile of George Washington in the upper left corner. She has had a wonderful time sleigh riding. In response to a question, she says her confirmation name is Mary Catherine. She was allowed to write to Mary Gardiner, a teacher she had last year. Her cold is better.
March 14, 1865 letter from Lucie Dunbar to her mother. Lucie is still a student at St. Joseph's Academy in Emmittsburg. She told her mother she was going on retreat and would not be able to write. Her first communion was coming soon and she needed money for an offering and for a new napkin ring.
Envelope with Emmittsburg, Md. postmark with date of November 5, but no year. It is addressed to Mrs. Amanda Dunbar, Ridge Post Office, St. Mary's County, Maryland. Presumably this is Lucie's mother. The envelope has a fairly crude Washington profile red stamp with a value of three cents.Collection
