This copybook was presented to Mr. Fenwick by Meredith Capper. The documents were found in an old house on Capper land. The house has since been torn down. Mr. Fenwick's note says Amanda Floyd Dunbar later married David Tyler, so perhaps the Dunbars were associated with this land and house.
This is a confusing piece. I think the cover was cut from some other document and ledger paper was used to make a copybook for a young girl.
The cover is a dark green and pale red marbled paper of slightly heavier weight than writing paper. The inside is buff. William Thompson used the entire space as an account book. The date at the top appears to be 1877, but it may actually be 1847 or 183?. There are entries for money he paid to others for the use of a slave for a certain period--one man's labor for a month appears to be worth $18. I don't think he could have done this in 1877. The top edge of the paper was cut to fit the pages used by Margaret Floyd, so most amounts and dates are cut away.
The page bloc is sewn in by hand. It is actually ledger paper, but the red and blue lines have faded almost completely away. Margaret used the paper to copy poetry by Byron and others and to make long lists of flowers and their meaning, e.g., "Rose bud, white Too young to love." Much of the poetry is extravagantly emotional. The page inside one cover is dated February 11, 1843, a page almost in the middle is dated April 12, 1843, the second page from the other cover is dated May 1, 1843, and the page next to the cover is dated January 12, but no year.Collection
