Scope and Content

1 sheet ; 9 7/8" x 8" This sheet is cream with barely discernible blue ruling. It was folded down to 2" x 4 7/8" to fit into an envelope and stayed there for a long time. October 30, 1867 Letter from Lt. B. J. Rittenhouse to Mr. Jackson, James Andrew's brother. Lt. Rittenhouse wrote from Fort Monroe, Virginia to express his sympathy in the death of James A. Jackson from yellow fever while on duty in Key West. Rittenhouse extolled Jackson as a model soldier. Jackson must have decided to remain in the Army after the war. There was an envelope with this letter. Someone had written a tiny 8 where the postmark would be. An attempt at a transcription is included. ************************************* Text on verso of the envelope: none
