Charles E. Fenwick Collection--Manning PapersEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1514Scope and Content
93 documents ; various sizes
This group includes wills, surveys, receipts, indentures, etc. that Mr. Fenwick photocopied from originals that had been in Aloysius King's safe. The originals of most of the documents were discovered in a box at the Society and the collection was cataloged and packaged appropriately. Most of the documents are brown, brittle, and broken; it is a miracle they survived. The Manning family lived in Medley's Neck; their home place was called Radnor. The documents are mostly about numerous land transactions in the area, some of which directly involved the Mannings and some that did not. Cornelius Manning is a common name in the papers, but there must have been more than one unless Methuselah was among us. There are many surveys with quite different amounts of acreage for the same properties. There are some slave sales documented in these papers. There are a few documents that do not seem to have anything to do with the family and that may have been mixed in by mistake, but perhaps the connection is just obscure.Collection
