Charles E. Fenwick Collection--Manning papers--Bernard Medley and Henry Hill indenture for Nun's Oak--1798Entry/Object ID
1995.001.1535Scope and Content
1 leaf ; 16"h x 19 1/2" w
This document was folded in half vertically and then folded several more times. Rodents dined on one corner of several folds thickness, resulting in three large holes in the document.
A fairly convoluted descent of the property through the Medley family is recited at the beginning of the indenture. Bernard Medley of Montgomery County was the owner of record at the time of the indenture. Henry Hill paid Medley 410 pounds for Nun's Oak on Breton Bay, a property of nearly 130 acres. Everyone's heirs and assigns were accounted for at length. Medley signed the indenture, John Smith and Enoch Millard witnessed, and Bernard Medley also acknowledged in writing the receipt of 410 pounds current money. The top edge of the document was cut in the traditional wavy line, but the other copy of the indenture is not present. There is a red wax seal by the first signature that is covered in paper cut in an "Aztec" design. There is a photocopy in the folder. It must be pieced together because of the size of the document; observe the guide marks on the piece. There is also an attempt at a transcription in the folder.Collection
