Scope and Content

1 leaf ; 12 1/16"h x 14 1/8"w William Shirtcliff made his will on March 25, 1705. He left a small parcel of land to his daughter Mildred and her husband Dennis Mahony. Another parcel of land was to be divided four ways for his wife, also named Mildred, a son Peter, son John, son William, and son Thomas. The younger sons could live on the land at age 18, but could not own it until they became 21. Peter would also inherit his mother's portion when she died. Another tract of land was divided equally between four daughters. He wanted his daughters considered to be of age when they turned 16. He left 24 acres of land to Eleanor Spink. John was to have the carpenter's tools. Mr Shirtcliff's books were divided among the children. His wife, Mildred, was designated as executrix. The witnesses were called in July of 1707 to swear the will was genuine. Elie Vallette copied the will in 1774 and James Harris swore it was a true copy in 1796. A photocopy and an attempt at a transcription are also in the folder.
