This folder contains an original pencil sketch of Ft. Smith and Ft. Kearney and old technology photocopies of each. The sketch of Ft. Smith 9 3/4" x 7 5/8" was done by G. Nicolai, Company D, Second U.S. Cavalry. It appears to have been done in pencil. There is no compass rose. A gate to the left of center of the palisade is labeled, "Road to Fort Phil Kearney" in ink. A building outside the wall is labeled "Sutter" in ink. On the opposite side of the fort is an area labled "Cemetery" in ink and another area on the hills behind the fort is labeled "Cemetery" also, but in pencil. To the right of the sketch is written, "Big Horn River" in ink. A very tall flag pole with an out-of-proportion flag is supported by guy poles or guy wires. At the bottom of the sketch is printed, "Fort C.F. Smith, Montana T." Someone has crossed out "Montana T." and written, "Wyoming Ter'y. 1868" in ink. All the ink additions appear to be in the same handwriting. A few trees are pictured on the surrounding hills. There is no text on the verso of the sketch. There is a very faint "thermofax flower" on the verso of the photocopy of this sketch.
The sketch of Fort Phillip Kearney, D.T. [Dakota Territory?], 10 5/8" x 8 1/2", was done by the same G. Nicolai. The view is a birds-eye view and shows the buildings within the fort. There is another totally out-of-proportion flag at one end of the fort. Someone has numbered the buildings in ink and then written a legend outside the body of the sketch. The roads to Ft. C.F. Smith and to Reno are identified. Ten groups of troops are shown heading out toward Ft. Smith. "1867" is written in ink below the sketch. Other troops are strung out across the top of the hills. There is no text on the verso of this sketch. The thermofax copy of this sketch has been exposed to light and is very dark.
Mr. Fenwick had a note on the envelope for these pictures: "valuable." There is a partial letter elsewhere in the collection from a young Leonardtown man who served in this area--the sketches may have belonged to him.Collection
