1 sheet ; 15 3/8" x 9 7/8" folded in half
This letter fragment is from John Abden Simms to his relative Charlotte Spalding Fenwick to explain the circumstances of the death of her son, Lewis Fenwick. At the head of the first page is, "United States Indian Service, Colville Agency, Che-we-lah, W. T." (Washington Territory) Mr. Fenwick apparently was grievously wounded protecting two young women from an attacker. A priest came from some distance to administer last rites and extreme unction and then the young man died. At this point the letter ceases. There is also reference to a an unfinished letter from Lewis Fenwick, but it is not extant. Mr. Charles Fenwick received this fragment from a woman who found it blowing in an alley in Leonardtown.Collection
