These books belonged to the St. Mary's Reading Room and Debating Society and carry accession numbers 186 and 187. The title page reads: The life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. : including a tour to the Hebrides / by James Boswell, Esq. New ed. with numerous additions and notes by John Wilson Croker, LL.D, F.R.S. New York : Harper & Bros., 1857. When the Society closed its doors in December, 1952, its book collection was given to the new county library system. In later years, many of the books found their way from the library to private hands. These volumes were kept by the Historical Society as an example of their type.Context
