This book measures 9 1/2" high by 7 1/2" wide. It is approximately 1/4" thick. The outside covers are dark red heavy flexible paper with a linen-like finish. Two indented lines, 3/8" apart, frame the outside edges, both front and back. The inside covers have manila paper pasted on the boards. The pages have 3/8" lines, suitable for a child to practice writing. Pearl provided an index for her work: each selection was numbered, titled, and its page in the book listed. She wrote in elegant cursive script. It appears that she copied stories, maybe even made up stories, and copied aphorisms and poetry. There are eighty numbered pages and then approximately 25 pages have been ripped out. So little is left of the pages that it is not possible to tell if there was any writing on them. The index identifies two selections which should have been on the missing pages. Several of the selections mention Leonardtown and talk about the Catholic religion and being kind to others. At the head of the first page of many selections is written "AMDG", and when the selection was a letter, the return address is Saint Mary's Academy. It is probably safe to assume Miss Russell was a student there. The material in the book does not appear to have been edited or corrected by a teacher, however.Collection
