Scope and Content

5 pieces ; 15 1/2"h x 10 1/4"w This photostat is of Liber M, no. 4, folio 114-118. Mrs. Fenwick wrote a long, extremely detailed will. It is hard to believe she was dying. She divided some of the land, made provision for several minor children, named a person to oversee the estate and another to oversee the education of the minor children, and provided gifts to several servants. One man was to receive pigs, but he was not to keep them at home. She accounted for the possible deaths of her minor children and was at pains to tell the older adult children not to abuse the younger children. Ignatius Fenwick was chided more than once. The will appears to say one young male slave could be free as long as he remained a member of the Catholic Church. The will was witnessed by John Wright, John Turner, and Edmund Scott. It was proved on December 12, 1660. An attempt at a transcription is included with the pieces.
