Scope and Content

3 pieces ; 16 3/8"h x 12"w This photostat is of Liber 22, folio 290-292. William Spalding Sr. owned Beaver Dam Manor and other properties. He had five sons, Thomas, William, Benedict, Henry, and John and several daughters and a wife, so his will is long. It appears that his two oldest sons already had tracts of their own, to which their father added by bequest. He was anxious about his mill and left it to all five sons and his wife to be managed only by family members. Each son received more land to belong to them and their heirs forever. He also designated a tract of land in Leonardtown to be owned jointly by all but the oldest son. He asked his wife, Ann, to give up her dower right in favor of having the home, its improvements, and a large tract of land during her life. My guess is that while it is not nearly a third of the estate, it is more than enough to be comfortable and would make things tidier all the way around. He left money, slaves, and animals to his daughters and asked that the personal property be given one third to his wife and two thirds equally divided between the three younger sons. The two youngest sons were to be of age at eighteen. The four oldest sons were appointed executors of the will. It was witnessed by another William Spalding, Elisabeth Cooper, and William Sturt [Stuart?]. The will was proved on January 9, 1740, but the document in the liber before this will was recorded in November of 1740, so it may be the will was really proved in 1741. An attempt at a transcription is included with the piece.
