1 folder ; 11 3/4" w x 9 5/8" h
The folder contains a copy of the script of a pageant given at the Tercentenary celebration. This copy is inscribed to Dr. Hayden by Kathleen Reed Coontz, author of the script, in June 1934. Dr. Hayden played Thomas Gerard in the play. The script is on 38 pages of terrible paper and is quite frail. There are a few handwritten insertions and one insertion is glued in place.
There is a copy of the program for the dedication ceremony and unveiling of a memorial to Fr. Andrew White held on June 10, 1934 under the auspices of the Order of Alhambra, Alcala Caravan. The booklet (9 1/4"h x 6 1/8"w) has dark gold heavy paper covers with a nice embossed rendering of a ship on the cover. The back cover is blank. A black "silk" cord ties the text block to the cover. Governor Ritchie was supposed to give an address, but a handwritten note in the program says "Didn't come." Every single person involved in the event is listed. These people do not appear to have been from St. Mary's County.
Copy of a booklet prepared by the Maryland Tercentenary Commission, with reproductions of paintings by C. Y. Turner and drawings by Edward Tunis purporting to show various events in the history of the new colony. The booklet (9"h x 6") w has an off-white paper cover. The front cover has an elaborate drawing by Mr. Tunis of the Ark and Dove under sail and the back has a silver rectangle showcasing the 1634-1934 dates. This 16 page (counting covers) booklet served as an invitation to all to attend the commemoration to be held in St. Mary's City on June 20, 1934.
There are also two copies of the official program for the two day celebration held June 15 and 16, 1934. They are 8 1/2" x 11" with 36 unnumbered pages and gold paper covers with black silhouette illustrations on the inside and outside--rather unusual. There are several photographs of various old homes in St. Mary's County, many of which no longer exist. The episodes of the pageant are listed and the people who took part are also listed. Most of the participants were from the county. There is a page describing the creation of the Ark and Dove replicas and then a page of the committees involved in the event.Collection
