St. Mary's County enjoyed a considerable reputation for fine horses. Mr. Fenwick gathered a collection of advertisements for stud service for horses native to the county and imported into the county for a season. Horses were registered at the county court, presumably so the court could be involved in the collection of fees if a serviced mare produced a foal. The advertisements are on the worst kind of paper and very fragile; examples of those in better condition were retained and sleeved. There are many record copies of advertisements and correspondence resulting from attempts to collect stud fees.
