This album had padded red velvet covers. It was 8 3/4" wide, 10" tall, and about 3 1/4" thick at the thickest point of the stuffing. Originally the cover carried a silver shield, but it had fallen away. There may have been something on the shield as well, but there are no marks on it. The pages were very heavy board with open "frames" designed to accept a photograph on each side. Each opening had gold tracing around it to enhance the image inserted. Eleven pages were meant to hold 5" x 7" images and four pages were meant to hold four 1 7/8" x 3 1/8" images on each side. There was no identification of the manufacturer on the piece. All the photographs had been removed with a clumsy hand. The album probably belonged to the Fenwick family. The following names were written under some of the empty photograph openings: Aloys. F. Fenwick II,
Alethea Greenwell Spalding, V. Howard Ford, Felix and Harry Fenwick, Bishop Martin John Spalding, Harry Fenwick, Mr. Wm. Drury, [Harry?] Spalding. The album had to be discarded; it had fallen completely apart and was dirty and insect-ridden. I retained the shield, a part of the cover cloth where the shield had been, and a sample page. There were a few loose pictures tucked in the album: an unidentified young gentleman with a straw hat, an unidentified young gentleman's school picture 1945-1946, Mr. Luke Matthews, an unidentified young priest, another priest, Fred May, an unidentified young man, and Carrie Fenwick's certificate of first confession. There was also a booklet without covers that appears to be a collection of poetry selections inscribed for Margaret Fenwick by friends and possibly relatives. One page is dated March 21, 1848. Most of the text is too faded to read easily. This type of book undoubtedly had a name. The individual photographs will be described in the Photographs section of this database.Collection
