25 documents of varying size
The 25 individual pieces of this series were found in the courthouse trash by G. Frank Wathen and given by him to J. Allan Coad, who subsequently gave them to Mr. Fenwick. The documents were found folded and bundled together at the bottom of a carton that was part of Mr. Fenwick's collection; some of the pieces are so frail, it is a miracle they survived. The material includes a deposition re will of John Mills, John A. and Richardetta Carter's petition against ejectment, a request to the clerk for a copy of Elias Wheatl[e]y's will, depositions from tenants on land claimed by Samuel DeButts, an incomplete deposition re children of Samuel Debutts, survey of the disputed land, a deposition about articles preserved by Mary Mason for the children of Sally Ann Nuthall, an indenture by Elizabeth Fowler of three negroes to her son and daughter-in-law for their use, a petition by George Morgan to use the proceeds of the sale of those negroes to buy farm equipment for the widowed Fowler daughter-in-law and to invest any remainder, two accountings filed by Morgan, a petition for money to educate the children, two judgments against Widow Fowler, several more judgments and other accountings of Mrs. Fowler's assets, a note from Sallie Jackson to the court clerk, Enoch B. Abell, asking him to record a deed, and a petition from Ida Wright Blakistone re Wheatly's Content and other lands around it. Many of these documents are related to each other.Collection
