1 sheet ; 12"h x 15 3/8"w This is one of 25 individual pieces found in the courthouse trash by G. Frank Wathen and given by him to J. Allan Coad, who subsequently gave them to Mr. Fenwick. The archivist found the documents folded and bundled together at the bottom of a carton that was part of Mr. Fenwick's collection; some of the pieces are so frail, it is a miracle they survived. With this indenture, Elizabeth Fowler sold to George H. Morgan, in his capacity as trustee, three Negro slaves, Caroline (30 years), Sophia (10 years), Henry (7 years). Morgan was to make the slaves available to Mary Julian Fowler, Elizabeth's daughter-in-law, and Mary's children. The slaves were not to be the property of Mary's husband or any future husband. A very interesting document. Why was it appropriate? The document was part of a later court proceeding because it is labeled Exhibit A.
