This is one of 25 individual pieces found in the courthouse trash by G. Frank Wathen and given by him to J. Allan Coad, who subsequently gave them to Mr. Fenwick. The archivist found the documents folded and bundled together at the bottom of a carton that was part of Mr. Fenwick's collection; some of the pieces are so frail, it is a miracle they survived.
This letter on a single sheet was folded into an envelope size and sent from Port Tobacco to the Register of Wills at Porto Bello in St. Mary's City. 20c postage was paid. The letter is dated June 19, 1843 from Lawrence M. Morton. He requests a copy of the will of Elias Wheatley that leaves a tract of land to Ann Waring. He also wants a copy of a deed conveying a tract of land from Albert Clagget to James Morton. Figuring on the address side would suggest the cost of this service was $5. Morton wanted the documents sent to Mrs. H. C. Matthews.
