1 page ; 12 1/4"h x 7 7/8"w This is one of 25 individual pieces found in the courthouse trash by G. Frank Wathen and given by him to J. Allan Coad, who subsequently gave them to Mr. Fenwick. The archivist found the documents folded and bundled together at the bottom of a carton that was part of Mr. Fenwick's collection; some of the pieces are so frail, it is a miracle they survived. Before Chapman Billingsley and John M. Thompson, Justices, Thomas M. Morgan, Sheriff, and G. Combs, Register [of wills]: Stephen Hayden and his un-named wife challenged the administration of the estate of John C. Mills by John J. Mills and called John B. Russell to testify to an oral declaration John C. Mills made before his death. Mrs. Hayden was Mr. Mills' sister, who provided a home for him in his last illness. Mr. Russell testified that Mr. Mills' said he had $100 in gold and $100 in paper money that he wished given equally to Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Peacock, another sister. Mr. Mills' brother William was to collect money owed to Mr. Mills and sell his property and divide the proceeds among the siblings. The court ordered the administrator to bring an accounting of the last debts of the deceased by June of 1840. The next entry is dated January 18, 1842 heard before Chapman Billingsley, James Hebb and Henry G. S. Key, Justices, George W. Morgan, Sheriff, and G. Combs, Register [of wills]. The court ordered something that cannot be read exactly. I think it says that the will of J. C. Mills be proven and recorded as deposed above, but what is to be done with $300, I cannot read.
