Description

Sepia tone photo 7 1/2"h x 9 1/2"w of five priests seated in a semi-circle of chairs on the porch of a clapboard house. The man in the center is clearly the oldest and the person in charge; Mr. Fenwick identified him as Father Charles K. Jenkins, S.J., Superior at St. Aloysius from 1882-1903. His chair is probably upholstered and much more elaborate than the others. Each man is wearing a long black cassock with long sleeves and a long belt. They also have on white shirts with long sleeves and a clerical collar. The priest on the left is the only one not wearing the traditional small black hat. Each of the younger men is holding a thick book, while Father Jenkins has a wide-brimmed black hat covering one hand, perhaps the hand holding his book. Father Jenkins and the priest on his left both have rosaries hanging from their belts. No one is looking at the camera directly. The only other priest identified is on the far right edge of the photo: Peter J. O'Carroll, S.J. Behind the men is a shuttered doorway. There are two weather instruments on the wall. The clapboards on the upper half of the wall are extremely dirty. ******************************************* On verso: Small piece of paper with five circles serves as an identification chart. Only Father Jenkins and Father O'Carroll are identified.
