Description

The cadets were on parade or being inspected on the side of a large, two story, painted brick building with a hipped roof and a two story porch projecting from the building. Round pillars, in need of paint, supported the second floor of the porch and its roof. The second story of the porch had a railing which appeared to be wrought iron with 3 horizontal rails and plain vertical poles alternating between full height and half height of the railing. On the right there were two windows up and two down, with the shutters on the first floor closed. The second floor windows facing into the porch were arched, with louvered shutters to match. The first floor windows facing into the porch were rectangular, with rectangular louvered shutters. A door on the first floor was capped by a transom window with six lights in two horizontal rows. On the narrow end of the building there were two four light windows with open shutters on the second floor and the same windows on the first floor with closed shutters. Behind the building was a large story and a half addition with a steep roofline. There were 35-40 young men in a single row. A group of seven young musicians were to the left of the line. The officers were widely spaced in front of the group. The men in the row had rifles with the butt resting on the ground; the detached men had swords unsheathed with the point on the ground. Everyone but the 3 young men in the front had plain uniforms with contrasting fabric on all edges and down the outside seam of the trousers, plus a dark standing collar. The officers in front had more elaborate uniforms. All the men were wearing hats of the Civil War style and white gloves. There was one woman seated in a chair behind the musicians. She had a large hat and lots of hair. There were trees and wild flowers visible in the lawn. ********************************** Text on verso: in pencil in Mr. Fenwick's handwriting "Charlotte Hall School St. Mary's County, MD Floyd Dixon's picture He was son of Daniel T.
