This folder contains a brown notebook with a heavy paper cover,10 1/2"h x 8 3/8"w used by Delos H. Smith as he planned and directed the renovation of the White House from 1937 until the spring of 1938. He liberated the booklet from the Historic American Building Survey where it was used for field notes. He xxed all that out with a black pen and wrote "D.H. Smith, Architect 1707 Eye St. N.W. Washington, D.C." In the middle of the cover was a line for Building, one for Street and City, and one for County and State. Mr. Smith filled in the first line with "Old White House--Charlotte Hall School--Col. B. F. Crowson, Principal." Below that in a large pencilled circle, he wrote "Contractor for Alterations Chas. B. Kilhofer." At the bottom right of the cover was a line for Project No. and in very small print in the center bottom edge "U.S. Government Printing Office 46660." Cover p. 4 was once attached to an Acco clamp; there are slots and rust marks to prove it. Cover p. 2 was entirely blank and Cover p. 3 had a small pocket taped in place with heavy brown tape. The paper in the book was of the four square variety with one inch squares delineated with heavy blue lines and within each of those squares were sixty-four tiny squares marked off in pale blue lines.
