Description

7 1/2"h x 9 1/4"w sepia tone photo of students at the Charlotte Hall School. Sadly, there is no date on this photo. It must be sometime before World War I, based on the uniform. Jacket and pants are of the same color and material. The jacket has a dark mandarin collar and the same material trims each edge of the jacket, all the way down the front and around the bottom. The same material runs around the top of the sleeve cuff. The letters CHS were on the front of each side of the collar. It is a very handsome, understated look. All wore short white gloves. This group of seven standing and five seated young men was in front of a brick building with a pair of heavy dark wooden doors with a transom window above. There was a large window with dark shutters on each side of the doors. The porch floor appeared to be concrete. The young man seated center front has an interesting hair style. There is an assortment of ages in the group. ********************************** Text on verso: in pen and pencil in the upper left corner, rather faint "Mrs. R. S. Coad DC 6951 9 to 5" on the top edge "3 D5 06 Tea" written at a later date, a numbered list of the young men's names, but there are no numbers on the image. I guess one assumes from left to right starting in the back. 1. M. Talbot Riggs or Bill Morsell 2. J. N. Graves 3. Robbins Holliday 4. Gordon Price 5. E. Enders ? 6. ? Chambers 7. H. McPherson 8. F. Coad 9. A. McCowan [?] 10. John B. Randolph 11. J. Edward Burroughs 12. William P. Compton
