Description

3 1/2" x 5 3/4" black and white photo of Cherry Hill. The Maryland Historical Trust Inventory of Historic Sites in Southern Maryland lists two Cherry Hill sites in Charles County, one of which has completely collapsed and one which does not look like this house at all. This photo is of a house that is two stories on one end and story and a half on the other end. There had been several additions to the building, each with its own roof line. The photo is light struck, so some details of the far side of the building are not visible. Nearest the photographer was a tall outside end single chimney of brick that appears to have been covered with plaster to the level of the second floor fireplace. There was a black roof with two different slopes and then two inside end chimneys that were sandwiched between the two halves of the building. The far half of the house had a long sloping standing seam roof that included a closed shed roof for a porch. The second floor of the black roof half had no openings in the gable end, one window with four lights in the long wall and one larger four light window in an addition. The bottom of that window was probably at floor level. On the first floor, there was an addition that began at the chimney on the gable end and came around to meet the wall of an earlier addition. There was a small porch on the gable end that was four steps from the ground. There was a dark wooden door right at the corner of the building. On the long wall there was a small four light window and then a larger four light window beyond it. The porch under the standing seam roof had a center door and window. The entire house was supported on posts or piles of masonry at strategic locations. The siding was clapboard in poor repair. There was a very simple wire? fence to create a small yard around the house. ******************************************* Text on verso: in dark blue pen "Cherry Hill on the Wicomico Front view faces road" in black stamp ink "642J"
