Description
6 1/4"h x 8 1/4"w photo of the Christmas gate at the encampment of the Maryland First Volunteer Infantry Regiment. There was a fence of shoulder high crossed saplings and behind it a two or three story seemingly unsupported triangle with a star at its peak. A covered wire "1898 Christmas" and three wire bells were part of the ensemble. Everything was carefully covered in some sort of foliage. The tents were in lines behind the fence. Three officers stood at the gate so the photographer would have a sense of scale. Mr. Duke was a member of Company I.
