Description
6"h x 8 1/8"w photo of the Christmas gate at the encampment of the Maryland First Volunteer Infantry Regiment. There was a fence of shoulder high crossed saplings and behind it a two or three story seemingly unsupported triangle with a star at its peak. A covered wire "1898 Christmas" and three wire bells were part of the ensemble. Everything was carefully covered in some sort of foliage. Because the photo is so faded, the tents behind the fence are barely visible. Sixteen soldiers stood along the fence so the viewer would have a sense of scale. Mr. Duke was a member of Company I, but he is not identified and may not have been in the photo.
