Scope and Content

1 box ; 12" x 17 1/2" x 3 1/4" Becky MacDonald brought this small collection to the Society. Mr. J. Claude (he went by Claude) Hayden was a World War I soldier and came home to be a baker in Leonardtown, part of Dillow & Hayden Bakery just off the square. He and his wife Philomena had one son, Andrew Jackson Hayden. The Haydens left Leonardtown sometime before 1940 and lived in Hyattsville where he worked for the Maryland Roads Commission. When he retired, the family came back to St. Mary's County, living first in the Blake Creek area and later on Chingville Road. The collection includes Mr. Claude Hayden's wallet with the usual identification cards and some family photos, a small notebook with several operator's licenses and other identification cards, a black scrapbook page with greeting cards from the World War I time period, and pieces from another page about wartime service. There are two newspaper photos from the time Mr. Hayden spent at the county nursing home and two certificates from governors of Maryland thanking Mr. Hayden for his service to the state's citizens. Young A. J. Hayden served in the Navy near the end of World War II; he would have been a very young sailor. It appears he was recognized for leadership abilities because his shoulder patches indicate he was an apprentice petty officer grade 2 even during training at Bainbridge Naval Training Station at the north end of Chesapeake Bay. There are sleeve patches for a white uniform and a blue uniform and a group photo of his unit at Bainbridge. There is one letter from the USO in Philadelphia telling the young man he had won a savings bond for being the 25,000,000th visitor at the center there. Mrs. MacDonald later brought a few more items: an autograph book that belonged to Mary Etta Hayden, genealogical charts for Haydens and their kin, and a few farm-related items.
