Description

This was Claude Hayden's notebook. From the looks of it, he used it for many, many years. Its black leatherette covers have each delaminated. There were heavy black sheets to be an interior cover for the contents, which were on three rings. There was 3" x 5" blue lined paper in the notebook, but only 4 sheets had any marks on them at all. There were, however, many individual items on the rings of the notebook, principally operator's licenses. 1. District of Columbia Motor Vehicle Operator's Permit no. 29399 issued to J. Claude Hayden of Hollywood, Md. Hayden was entitled to drive gasoline or electric automobiles, but not steam powered vehicles. He paid $2 for the license on June 29, 1915. The license was in a small brown envelope that also contained a Sacred Heart blessing on dull red felt--it would have been a religious medal, but was not metal. There are three holes punched on one edge of the envelope so it could live in the notebook. 2. Dull blue card for Maryland Motor-Vehicle Operator's License no. 29465 for J. Claude Hayden of Hollywood, Md. age 19. There were spaces on the back to note convictions and amounts of fines, but Hayden was a good driver. There are three holes punched on one edge of the card so it could live in the notebook. 3. Another sepia tone photo of Louise Murphy at the same location as an earlier photo. She had on a strange plaid dress and white shoes with bows. On the back, in pencil, "July 3rd, 1920 Louise Murphy Jamesville Frederick Co. R.F.D. 1 Box 11, Md." There are three holes punched on one edge of the photo so it could live in the notebook. 4. Citizen Seamen's Identification Card no. 6785 issued in Baltimore. There is a 2"x2" sepia tone photo of Joseph C. Hayden with his signature and his left thumb print in purple ink. He was 24 years old on October 16, 1919 and was 5' 8" in height, with a fair complexion, light brown hair, and gray eyes. There are three holes punched on one edge of the card so it could live in the notebook. 5. Sailor's Arrival and Departure Card made in Baltimore on February 2, 1920. Charles F. Hanna was the Collector for the District of Maryland. The arrival of an illegible ship name in Baltimore was written in the arrivals section of the verso of the card. There are three holes punched on one edge of the card so it could live in the notebook. 6. Four sheets of notebook paper with just a little figuring or text on them. Nearly all the sheets in the notebook were blank and were not retained. There are three holes punched on one edge of the sheets so they could live in the notebook. 7. Dull yellow receipt and Identification card (3 1/2"h x 2"w) for Nimrods of America. J. C. Hayden paid dues of $10 in October 1929. This little card was not punched. 8. Very dirty cloth and paper window envelope from State of Maryland Motor Vehicle Commissioner postmarked February 28, 1916. In the envelope was an Army Chauffeurs' License issued by the headquarters of the Second Army for the 310th Field Artillery dated April 14, 1919. Private Hayden was authorized to drive a four wheel drive truck. Each piece had three holes punched in one end. I think the Army license was in the envelope just to keep it safe.
