Scope and Content

1 box of 27 letter folders, 4 legal folders, a Bible, 3 bundles of Christmas cards, 2 batches of receipts J. Allan Coad and his two wives, Clara Carter Hyatt Coad and Laura Hebb Kennedy Coad, lived at Porto Bello and Chesnut Hill. Coad was the youngest child of J. Edwin Coad and his second wife, Mary Allan Coad. Coad knocked around some in his youth, but eventually returned to the county. He was fortunate to marry the widow, Clara Hyatt, because she was an owner of Carter Products Co. and owned Porto Bello. Coad was a member of the Maryland Senate for several years, especially during the Depression, when he was severely criticized for not providing more relief to the hungry and unemployed in Baltimore. After his political career, he became involved in banking and running the farm at Porto Bello. He was something of an alpha male for his many relatives, so a good bit of this collection is correspondence with family. As is often the case, Coad's outgoing letters are not here, but other's responses to him are in the folders, so guesswork may be involved. There is material about Coad's management of Clara's affairs and her estate, and then information about the management of Porto Bello after her death. When Coad married Mrs. Kennedy, she seemed to take over the day-to-day affairs of the farm. Just for fun, there are many Christmas and other greeting cards in the collection.
