Scope and Content

156 p. ; 23 cm. J. Edwin Coad was a well-educated Saint Mary's County farmer. He was born on September 12, 1825 at Cherryfields, the eldest of six children. He was educated at Charlotte Hall School and St. Mary's College in Baltimore, graduating in 1845. He read law with an uncle, but left that in favor of his home farm. He married Ellen Manning in 1847 and had nine children with her. She died in 1875 and Mr. Coad married Mary Allan in 1877, with whom he had three more children. The brown leather book is 23 cm. high by 15 cm. wide. The front cover is quite dished, all the edges are abraded, and the top of the spine is loose. Both the front and back cover have "1867" and the seal of the state stamped in the leather. The spine title is "Maryland Constitution 1867" on a red background. Text on title page: "The Constitution of the State of Maryland formed and adopted by the Convention which assembled at the City of Annapolis, May 8, 1867, and submitted to and ratified by the people on the 18th day of September 1867. with marginal notes and references, to acts of the General Assembly and decisions of the Court of Appeals, with an appendix and index by Edward Otis Hinkley, Esq., of the Baltimore Bar. Printed by order of the Convention. Baltimore : Printed and published by John Murphy & Co. 182 Baltimore Street. 1867" Mr. Coad was a member of the House of Delegates in 1868 and this may have been his copy of the new Constitution. His name is written in pencil on the flyleaf inside the front cover, but I am not sure it is his handwriting. His name is written again on the half title page. There is a little bit of underlining at Article 36 on page 20 which has to do with religion, a note on page 61, and a note inserted at page 71 having to do with judges. Someone pasted a newspaper obituary for Baker A. Jamison, a member of the St. Mary's County delegation to the Constitutional Convention, on page nine. The acidic clipping has damaged pages eight and nine and someone, likely Mr. Fenwick, drew a blue arrow on page eight.
