Paula Thompson, older sister of J. Allan Coad. declined markedly in the late 1950s and became a problem for her family. They sought Coad's advice.
October 21, 1953 Coad had given J. Edwin Coad's walking stick to Edwin, who was very pleased to have it.
April 28, 1959 Anne Tiley sent information about Mrs. Thompson's condition. All the doctors advised putting her in a nursing home. She hoped Coad would visit to assess the situation.
May 13, 1959 John Thompson sent an update. All the facilities they had seen were terrible. Was there anywhere in St. Mary's County that might serve their purpose?
May 15, 1959 Coad responded that there was no public institution in Maryland where he would put a relative.
September 5, 1959 Edwin Thompson wrote Coad about the details of his mother's finances and illness. The children had contributed money to their mother for several years. When her house sold, Edwin discovered many unpaid bills and general financial disarray. Her nursing home bill was $85 per week. Her children were trying to determine the best way to manage the expense.
October 12, 1959 Coad apparently contributed to Paula's care, which Edwin gratefully and gracefully acknowledged.
November 7, 1959 Edwin reported on his mother's condition.
November 9, 1959 Catherine thanked Coad for his gift to her mother. George [her husband?, brother?] was soon to go to the hospital for tests.
November 5, 1961 Edwin reported on his mother and his brother's?, brother-in-law's? possibly final illness.Collection
