Scope and Content

1 folder ; 9 5/8" x 11 3/4" Reverend Wheeler was a pastor at St. Aloysius Church in Leonardtown in the late 1940s to early 1950s. It was unusual for him to be in one place for a long period. His specialty seems to have been conducting retreats for nuns and others and being a short term priest in parishes all over the country. He and Coad somehow became friends. Coad would send him money a few times a year, for which Wheeler was always grateful. Wheeler often said masses for Clara Coad after her death. Something about Wheeler's tenure at St. Aloysius did not go well; there are many references to an odious comparison between his administration and that of the priest who succeeded him. The letters were on half sheets of paper from the Gesu Rectory in Philadelphia, sometimes handwritten and sometimes typed. July 23, 1953 Father Wheeler had been in various spots on the east coast managing retreats. He asked to be remembered to the Saunders family. August 5, 1953 Father thanked Coad for a check and asked to be remembered to the Saunders family. August 12, 1953 Father would be in Leonardtown for a short time. He hoped to visit the Saunders family. December 15, 1953 Father thanked Coad for his gift. He would be in the hospital for hernia surgery at the end of December. October 31, 1955 Father thanked Coad for his gift. He had recuperated from surgery in Leonardtown, but talked again about the "odious comparison." He lamented that trains, as a method of getting around, were going away. He found flying difficult. February 14, 1959 Father was in Kansas City, visiting his brother. He thanked Coad for his gift and asked to be remembered to the Saunders family. May 27, 1959 Father was in Macon, Georgia, but expected to visit Leonardtown in the summer. June 2, 1959 Father was still in Georgia. He mused about the new St. Aloysius Church building and his unfortunate tenure there. October 14, 1959 Father announced his arrival in Leonardtown on Friday. December 4, 1959 Father had been very busy traveling around and was presently in Denver. He thanked Coad for his kind hospitality several weeks ago. He asked to be remembered to the Saunders family. December 7, 1961 Father hoped all was well with Coad since he had not heard from Coad for some time. He asked to be remembered to the Saunders family. Wheeler was to give the first Novena of Grace in the new St. Aloysius Church, if it was finished by March 4. There is a pencilled response on the bottom of the verso--Coad may have been sick and could not reply.
