Scope and Content

6 boxes (28") J. Edwin Coad was a well-educated Saint Mary's County farmer. He was born on September 12, 1825 at Cherryfields, the eldest of six children. He was educated at Charlotte Hall School and St. Mary's College in Baltimore, graduating in 1845. He read law with an uncle, but left that in favor of his home farm. He married Ellen Manning in 1847 and had nine children with her. She died in 1875 and Mr. Coad married Mary Allan in 1877, with whom he had three more children. Mr. Coad was a voluminous correspondent, both with people and newspapers. This collection contains many hundreds of letters in the original handwritten version and in typed transcription. There appears to be much which has been lost; the transcription sheets are numbered and there are many missing pages. The bulk of the letters are between Mr. Coad's and his oldest daughter, Emily Dorsey, and with Mrs. Neale, a friend of his youth. There are many other letters to family and friends.
