These three examples can give one an idea of how checks have changed. In 1935, any check that was submitted for payment was eventually returned to you after physically traveling to a Federal Reserve clearinghouse. These checks were between banks rather than between individuals, but the process was the same. On the top left, inder the name of the bank, was the County Trust's bank number: 65-220. In the lower left, the number for the Baltimore National Bank was 7-16 over 5, 5 being for the Fifth Federal Reserve District in Richmond. There is a large red stamp on the verso of the check to show that the check had cleared. It was also hole punched with the date of clearance: Paid 9-5-35, as an example.
