This is a dark blue and white jacquard coverlet. The bedding experts who visited the Society in 2004 said this was probably handwoven between 1855-1865, before machine jacquard weavings became available. It is in two mirror image pieces, stitched together. The material is wool. A November 20, 1975 photograph in the Enterprise, p. E-1, shows this coverlet displayed at the Farm Museum. It is identified as belonging to Eloise Pickerell, county librarian. Her great-great-grandmother, unnamed, made the coverlet.
This description is of the coverlet with white background, blue figures. The top is the turned edge and the bottom is the fringed edge. If the coverlet is turned over, the background is blue and the figures are white.
Beginning at the turned edge: On the right edge is a 6" border space. There is a 5-light 2 story house, center door and 2 internal chimneys. The door is frayed. Next to the house is a fence with a tree with a bird nest. There is an adult bird on each side of the nest and 4 baby birds in the nest. Next is another 5 light 2 story house. 2 windows and the door are frayed. Next is a fence with a tree with 2 large flowers, a 5 light 2 story house with the center door frayed, a fence with tree and birds, a house with the door frayed, a fence with the tree with 2 large flowers, a house, a fence with the tree with birds, a house, and a half a fence with half a tree. Above these figures is a solid blue line 1/4" wide, a white line 1/4" wide and then a solid blue line 1/2" wide. This line extends 5 inches from the top, after which there are 26 blue squares, giving the effect of a dotted line. Then there is a solid line for 13" and another group of 26 broken squares. There is another solid line for 13", another set of squares, and the final solid line for 6 3/4" to the border at the bottom. Next is a 1/4" white line and a 1/4" solid blue line. Again beginning at the turned edge is a 5" portion of a motif of a blue 8 sided figure with white stars. There is an 11" rectangle motif of what looks like small dumbbells and lanterns. Next is a 13" multi-sided motif of stars, another rectangle, more star, another rectangle and half of the star motif. Again beginning at the turned edge is an 8-sided motif with blue tulips in the center. Next to that is a 4" x 3" rectangle with leaves, another tulip motif, another rectangle, and more tulips. Beginning at the turned edge again is half of a stars motif, a rectangle, the stars, a rectangle, the stars, rectangle, and half of the stars motif. Beginning at the turned edge is half of the tulips feature, the rectangle with leaves, another set of tulips, more leaves, another set of tulips and more leaves. At this point, the right edge is reached and the seam for the two halves is found. The coverlet is carefully sewn together so everything matches and all the above figures appear in mirror fashion on the other half of the piece.
On the fringe end is a 6" border. Beginning on the right corner is half a house, an entire house, a gate and fence, a house, a gate, another house, a gate, and the final house on this half.Collection
