This is a traditional crazy quilt because of the various shapes, fabrics used, and embroidery stitches, but it may also be a friendship quilt because some blocks are signed and the embroidery is probably not all done by the same person.
The most frequent color in the piece is dark red. The backing is bright gold cotton. The blocks may have been pieced by machine with the cross stitch and other stitches applied as decoration.
Each block is some variant of 7" square and made of smaller pieces. The basic arrangement is 9 blocks by 9 blocks, but there are occasional rectangles inserted. The circle in the center is 11" in diameter. Rather large cross stitches outline nearly every scrap of fabric. There are many different fabrics used, but dressy fabrics such as velvets, silks, and taffetas predominate. Cotton embroidery thread predominates, but there are a few places where ribbon appears to have been used. The embroidery is mostly rather clumsy; it is tempting to think this quilt top was made by rather young people.
This description presumes you are facing the quilt. It begins with the top left corner and goes across to the top right corner, back to the left edge, back to the right edge and so on until the bottom left square. A feature of each square is mentioned, the number of pieces in it, and the thread colors used for the embroidery.
