Description

11"h x 8 3/4"w x 3 1/2"d Holy Bible belonging to John F. Dent. The covers are very dark brown with a simple chain decoration around the very edges of the covers. The front cover and spine are completely detached from the back cover; all covers are detached from the text block. The interior cover pages are teal, cream, and red marbling. The book was published by C. Alexander and Co. of Philadelphia in 1834 as Alexander's Stereotype Edition. There are multiple numberings for the Bible's pages and many illustrative engravings. The engravings have darkened the adjacent pages. Just inside the cover was pasted the newspaper obituary for Robert Dent Posey, who died in a hunting accident on December 29th of an unstated year at the age of 24. The family record pages were detached from the text block. Many of the entries are much after the fact by an unknown hand, which is very unfortunate. Besides the usual Bible text, there were marginal notes, an index, an alphabetical list of Biblical names, and a table of coins and weights. As was common, the primary function of the Bible was to press botanicals. Between pages 290 and 291 is a flower, at page 325 is another flower, at p. 425 there are leaves, at p. 467 there are four flowers, at p. 577 there are leaves, at p. 643 is a flower, and at p. 672 there is another small flower. Many of the beginning and ending pages of the book have come loose from the stitching and are damaged. The covers have been attacked by vermin in several places.
