Scope and Content

1 correspondence case; 1 25 1/4 x 19 3/8 x 2 1/2 flat box This collection includes samples of the material collected by Nettie Blakistone, who lived in Washington, D.C. from late childhood until her death. She was a cousin of Fannie Dent--Fannie's mother was a Blakistone. Miss Blakistone was very interested in events in Washington and collected newspapers and magazines for years. Her family at one time owned Blakistone/St. Clement's Island, so there is a little material about that. One of her brothers, Zachariah Blakistone, was a florist in Washington, and lived to an advanced age, so there is material about him. There are many political cartoons by Clifford K. Berryman of the Washington Star--Miss Blakistone was very distantly related to him. Many rotogravure sections about the World War I have been retained as photocopies and the first sections of a few issues of the Washington Post have also been retained as examples of World War II journalism. There is also a rotogravure section featuring the sculptor Felix de Weldon, who created the altar sculpture in St. Nicholas church at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and who planned a piece for the Shrine of Tolerance at Historic St. Mary's City.
