Members of the Dorsey family practiced law in the county for generations. During the late 1920s and well into the 1930s, Mr. Dorsey handled dozens of collection cases. In large cities, collection agencies developed lists of small town lawyers who received a small fee for collecting accounts from rural debtors. Mr. Dorsey received commissions from Baltimore and Pittsburgh collection bureaus. He was often tardy in his efforts. Sometimes he advised the company that the debt was uncollectible and sometimes he did take the debtor to court. These are examples of his work.
July 26, 1927 Bell Motor Company received a court judgment against Theodore Thomas of $194, but costs and fees drove the total bill to over $260.
July 24, 1929--August 18, 1931 General Motors Acceptance Corporation sued Vincent Foresta and the debt was eventually settled.
April 10, 1930--October 24, 1933 An attorney in New York sued J. W. Guy & Company in Loveville on behalf of U.S. Rubber Company. The result is not clear.
July 6, 1930--December 31, 1931 Baltimore Feed & Grain Company asked payment of R. H. Sears. Mr. Sears asked for sixty days to get his tobacco sold, but it is not clear from the papers that he ever paid.
August 28, 1930--January 5, 1932 Coppage Motor Company in Pearson sued Joseph W. Briscoe for $117.81. The result is not in the papers.
September 9, 1931--September 18, 1931 John Watts, Ltd., a tailor in London, England, dunned R. H. Sears for $805 worth of clothing. The result is not in the papers.
October 12-27, 1931 Dr. Grass, of Washington, D.C. wanted payment from Osborne Abell. The result is not in the papers.Collection
