Members of the Dorsey family practiced law in the county for generations.
W. S. Thrall had a general store in Bushwood. He owed many of his suppliers money and had a terrible time paying his bills. Mr. Dorsey was often the collection agent for the companies. There is nothing in the files to tell us how it all turned out.
early 1930s Bassan Neckwear Company in Baltimore wanted $16.75.
April 22, 1931 to December 15, 1932 H. B. Davis Company, a paint supplier in Baltimore went around and around with Mr. Thrall. He finally sent them a letter in November of 1932 saying he hoped to pay soon; he had $8,000 in accounts outstanding with local farmers, but he was not about to put them and their children out in the cold to get the money.
December 8, 1931 to July 12, 1933 Republic Paint & Varnish Works in Chicago sued for $44.01 and received all but $4.56.
November 21, 1932 to November 14, 1933 Mr. Dorsey was asked to collect $12.00 for Andrew Reiter & Company of Baltimore, but he eventually returned the claim as uncollectible.
December 8, 1932 The Thrall's dentist in Washington had to make a claim.
June 29, 1933 to October 14, 1933 Mr. Thrall owed Hood Rubber Company less than $50. There are many letters back and forth--the time and effort expended cost far more than the debt. During that time, Mr. Thrall suffered storm damage at his store. He paid $5 here and there and eventually settled the claim.
August 16, 1933 to November 21, 1933 American Manufacturing Company of Brooklyn, N.Y. claimed Mr. Thrall owed $12.92. He eventually paid the money. A letter shows Mr. Dorsey kept one third of the amount as his fee.
August 18, 1933 to December 4, 1933 Anderson & Ireland Hardware in Baltimore sought payment of $36.98. Mr. Thrall was not responsive, so eventually Dorsey was authorized to sue. However, the files do not indicate the outcome.Collection
