Description

This black and white photo showed Washington Street in Leonardtown on the east side opposite the square. There was a large three story light colored building on the right and the two story Duke Building on the left. There was a power pole on the corner of Washington and Fenwick Streets and a two and a half story house with large porches on each floor across Fenwick Street. The light colored building had large show windows on the first floor with the entry doors to the establishments in the center. There is no sign to tell what stores are in the building, but there are banners indicating a sale. The second story had nine six-over-six light windows in groups of three and there are single windows with two-over-two lights on the side of the building. Most of the windows on that floor were open and it appeared to be under construction. The third floor had one six-over-six window in the center of the wall, but all the other openings were louvered. There are several men on the sidewalk and in the street. The Duke Building appeared to have three stores facing Washington Street. It also had a large "Theater" sign above its building name. On the right was a hardware store with a large show window and four nine-light windows above that. The door and transom window were on the left. There were gas pumps in front of that store. The next store has an illegible sign and a large striped awning with an American flag hanging from it. The final store had a sign saying "Soda Fountain" with a Coca-Cola sign cantilevered out from the corner of the building. There were several cars parked perpendicular to the sidewalk. There was a big box on the side of the road and piles of dirt or trash. The house on the parallel corner had a railing on the second floor porch and some sort of striped awning on the first floor. There were multiple chimneys on the building. ********************************** Text on verso: "J Leonardtown, Md. ca. 1940 See Chronicles Oct. 1980, P. 250"
