Sepia tone photo 5 9/16"h x 3 7/8"w on 8"h x 6"w dark gray board of Edward Leo Spalding. Mr. Spalding is standing facing the camera. His right arm is cocked at the elbow and his hand tucked behind his body. His left arm and hand rest on a small stack of books on a table and his hat may be laid at an angle on his arm. Mr. Spalding has substantial dark hair that is just beginning to recede and curls lightly down over his ears. He has a full beard and mustache. His dark eyes are rather deep set. He has on a light shirt with a stick pin visible and a small dark bow tie. A buttoned vest is visible at the bottom of his chest and a coat with rather small lapels is buttoned once over the vest. The lapels and the edges of the coat seem to be edged in a contrasting material. There are additional buttons barely visible on the coat and the dark trousers seems to have a fly front. The background behind him is plain. There is a "frame" stamped in the board and in the 1 1/8" space at the bottom is stamped "Perkins Baltimore 17 W. Lexington St." On the verso is written in black fountain ink: "Edward Leo Spalding born in St. Mary's County 1822 died in Baltimore 1874."
